Valley of the Kings
On the west bank of the Nile, across from Luxor, in the center of the Theban Necropolis, is the blessed, eternal work of art known as the Valley of the Kings, a golden history book. The greatest Pharaohs of the 18th, 19th, and 20th dynasties of the new kingdom (1570–1050 BC), including Ramses II, Hatshepsut, Seti I, Tutankhamen, and many others, rest in 63 royal tombs beneath the surface. The discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb, one of the most well-known archaeological sites on earth, is what made the valley famous. In 1979, it and the entire Theban Necropolis were designated as World Heritage Sites.
Hatshepsut Temple
On the golden huge granite hills of Deir El Bahari, the exquisite holy of the holies temple of Queen Hatshepsut (1507–1458 BC) was built over a period of 15 years beginning in 1479 BC. In addition to internalizing the regal legacy of Hatshepsut, one of the most successful pharaohs in Egyptian history, this magnificent structure was built to honor the creator sun god Amun. It also serves to gain worldwide fame as the best-preserved and most entrancing example of traditional ancient Egyptian architecture.
Colossi of Memnon
Amenhotep III’s (1386–1349 BC) gigantic Colossi of Memnon was built in 1350 BC to guard the entrances to his ruined temple, which no still stands. It underwent numerous renovations and reconstructions, and during the Greco-Roman era, when it was renowned for its dawn vocal phenomenon, it underwent numerous changes to its design and appearance. The two enormous sculptures are decorated with magical elements that depict Hapi’s history, that of his family, and other Nile deities.
